You tend to get yourself in trouble when I m not around. I m worried for your health.
I ve got a truck I need to get back to the warehouse, Jesse said.
You mean that one? Alex asked. He pointed out the window. The men he d
called to deal with Jesse s unexpected foray into work as a truck driver expertly
maneuvered the tractor-trailer out of the restaurant s parking lot. Good. At least that s
taken care of, he thought, disgusted all over again that his lover had hidden from him
right under his nose. You do remember that I own Roman Shipping, right?
Jesse flushed. I knew it would be the last place you d look for me.
Alex snorted. It was, but I found you eventually. The name threw me off. Mike
Holly? Really? From the corner of his eye, he could see the two students in the booth
watching their interaction avidly.
Jesse hunched his shoulders. It worked.
It only worked for a few weeks. Alex had had enough. He moved in and pulled
Jesse into a rough hug. You re an idiot. He ignored the men who moved in to drag
away their groaning buddies on the floor. Good riddance.
Jesse hugged him back. I know. I d just about figured that out on my own.
You re not running away again. Alex stepped back, then pulled the ring he d
been carrying around for the past several weeks out of his pocket. If I have to chain you
to my side, that s what I m going to do. He smoothly went to one knee, ignoring the way
his heart sped up. This was his last chance to make Jesse understand that they were
better off together.
The guys in the booth gasped. Jesse s eyes bugged out. Alex smothered a grin.
Is that my father s ring? Jesse asked, breathless. Holy shit, it is. I wondered
what had happened to it after the police dropped it off.
Yeah. I had it resized and cleaned. Alex held it out. And if you want it back,
you re going to have to marry me. He stayed on his knee, hoping like hell he wasn t
being a fool. Jesse looked like someone had knocked him over the head with a very hard
bottle. Will you?
Jesse blinked, then slowly reached out. Marry you? He took Alex s hand and
drew him to his feet. His eyes were bright with unshed tears. Yeah, okay.
Alex grinned. Yeah, okay, what? He wanted to hear it out loud. He wasn t
going to let Jesse get away with a half-assed answer.
Yes, I ll marry you, Alex, Jesse quietly said, right into his ear.
Alex let out the breath he d been holding. Thank fucking God. He grabbed
Jesse s hand and slid the ring onto his finger. That s it then. No more taking off for
who-knows-where without me.
Jesse shook his head and kissed him softly. I won t do that again. It didn t do any
good, anyway.
Alex barely refrained from saying I told you so. He manfully shoved his glee down
so that it wouldn t show on his face. Let s go home, Jesse.
Jesse smiled, then frowned as his eyes flicked to the door. The next thing Alex
knew, he was on the ground as the front window of the diner shattered and sprayed
sharp fragments all over them.
Chapter Five
Fucking hell, Jesse cursed, tackling his fiancé to the grimy floor of the
restaurant. Someone screamed, but he didn t have time to figure out who it was. Frantic,
he shoved his hand into Alex s jacket and pulled out his Beretta, automatically checking
the safety. More bullets whizzed through the glass, shattering the mirror behind the bar.
Fuck! He couldn t see who was shooting at them. If he couldn t tell what the hell was
going on, he couldn t stop it.
You said that already, Alex said mildly, letting Jesse push him near the booth
with the two students. He shook his head, clearing some of the glass from his hair. You
really like that word. Fuck.
Shut up, Jesse said, not in the mood for Alex s weird sense of humor.
I m just saying, Alex continued, rolling to a crouch and pulling out another gun
from somewhere. Jesse was mildly impressed until his boyfriend popped up, trying to
see who was shooting at them.
Jesus, Alex! He grabbed his lover by the back of his jacket and yanked until he
fell back.
Will you stop shoving me down? Alex gave him a disgusted look. I can take
care of myself. He looked like he was going to complain some more until the sound of
something exploding outside had them both wincing.
The hell? Jesse muttered. This was way more destruction than one guy out for
his blood could make. Or should. Christ, he s probably completely whacked out of his mind, he
thought, thinking of the man who d tried to kill him. Did someone follow you here?
I don t know. I don t think so, Alex murmured. Maybe we should sneak out the
back.
Jesse shook his head. Not until we know more. More bullets whizzed past their
heads, breaking the window above the booth.
Get down! Jesse hissed to the guys still sitting in the seats like idiots. When they
stared at him blankly, he reached out and pulled the one closest to him down to the floor.
Do you have a death wish? Get down, kid.
The young man shook his head and dragged his friend down as more bullets
sprayed through the eatery. What s happening?
I don t know, but I intend to find out, Jesse bit out. His mind raced through
